About this episode:
Despite the advancement of
women’s rights, adolescent girls continue to be bombarded by images of ideals
that are unattainable and grow up under incredible pressure from the
negative impact of media and other powerful forces in our society. While
seeking their own identity, talents, success, and purpose, many girls struggle
with the pressure of sexual activity or substance abuse, limited
options due to their family’s economic background, and a exploitative
culture for young women of color. Too often, adolescent girls in
our city lose self-confidence, fall into depression, and make poor choices that
impact their opportunities long into the future. Angela Patton, the
founder and Executive Director of Camp Diva, has devoted her life to counter
these negative pressures. Camp Diva is a center for adolescent girls to
receive positive support, reinforce self-confidence, and grow through
empowerment as they transition to womanhood.
