04/23/13 - Great Expectations

About this episode:
Great Expectations is a Virginia Community College System initiative that provides educational, vocational, and financial support to those adolescents (18 years and older) who have 'aged out' of foster care. These young adults often have a sporadic educational history, are lacking stable familial resources and guidance, and must choose minimum wage jobs just to provide for themselves. To give these young adults a chance at a college degree and a rewarding career, coaches and tutors from VCCS help with career and major assessments, paperwork and applications, subject tutoring, connections to scholarships, advise on a low-cost and rewarding education, and provide emergency funding. Great Expectations prepares youth for professional and personal success and provides an essential support structure for young adults who have, through no fault of theirs, ended up on their own.
