04/02/13 - ROSMY

About this episode:

Last week’s Supreme Court proceedings prompted some public officials and media outlets to direct scornful language at LGBT Americans. As a personal issue about identity, equality and love becomes so publicly contentious, imagine how difficult growing up gay or lesbian could be right now for adolescents who don't receive positive social messages about their orientation. LGBT teens are often subjected to bullying, often feel insecure in their families, schools and communities, and are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than the average teen. ROSMY is Richmond’s support center for LGBT youth, helping them develop security, pride, and even leadership and advocacy skills as they grow in a community of encouragement. ROSMY offers support groups and leadership engagement programs to nurture youths’ identities, maintains a 24/7 help line, and provides education on inclusivity for families, schools, and the RVA community. Today’s Inspire Indeed features Beth Panilaitis, Executive Director of ROSMY, who shares information on ROSMY's programs and two upcoming events: the annual Catalyst Awards on 4/20 and the ROSMY Prom on 5/11.
