About this episode:
Studio Two Three is a community printmaking studio founded
in 2008 to give VCU Arts graduates a print facility where they could create
work -- sharing the space and the cost of equipment. They now provide art
residencies, internships, workshops, gallery shows and other events to promote
printmaking as an accessible and affordable endeavor for Richmond’s artistic
community. Studio Two Three has material for screenprinting, intaglio, relief,
lithography and photography, and is currently outfitting a new Digital Arts
Lab. Their non-profit model is not pyramid-based; instead, it’s nearly a
cooperative, with funds pooled from studio members and class fees to cover
basic operating costs and overhead, so that they’ll never be dependent on
grants and never have to close their doors. Studio Two Three is open 24/7 and
class fees are reasonable, Executive Director Ashley Hawkins says, to “lower
the barrier of making [art]work.”
